American Data Supply carries Opterna's entire line of fiber optic media converters including the 1100C fiber optic media converter line with ST, SC, MTRJ, and FJ connectors available for several years and is being used in a wide variety of applications in the industrial, educational, and military markets. These converters enable designers to configure a “fiber to the wall” application without the need to locate a fiber wall outlet near a power outlet. Power is supplied through a “Y” cable that enables the converter to draw power from the computer keyboard port. A version of the “Y” cable that enables the converter to be powered from a Sun Workstation keyboard port is also available

Fiber Optic Media Converters are devices that simply receive data signals from one media, convert and transmit them to another other media. For example, media converters can convert signals transmitted on a copper cable to signals that run on fiber. Since Fiber Optic Media Converters function as physical layer networking devices, they remain completely transparent to other networking devices and any upper-level protocol.Media Converters can function in either half-duplex or full duplex mode. Full duplex Ethernet over UTP runs at 20 or 200Mbps, while half-duplex Ethernet over UTP runs at either 10 or 100 Mbps. Full duplex Ethernet is especially valuable in linking two switches or connecting a switch to a file server. No adjustments are necessary when using either mode. A Fiber Optic Media Converter will automatically sense which mode is in operation.

TC Communications Fiber Optic Media Converters- TC Fiber Media Converters - The TC3300R/S is typically used to interconnect 10/100/1000Mbps switching hubs, workstations or any other Ethernet, Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet compliant device at distances up to 100km.

Transition Networks Fiber Optic Media Converters-Transition Networks-10/100/1000 media converter that converts the electrical signal of a 10/100/1000 Ethernet signal from copper to fiber. This solution will offer a low-cost integration option for network managers who want to migrate from 10/100 networks to Gigabit Ethernet. Gigabit only switches can now be connected to 10/100 networks without the need to upgrade the 10/100 side, allowing network managers to add new equipment gradually. Fiber interface runs at 1000Base speeds, which enables users to connect Gigabit ports on fiber switches. Fiber connectivity options include SX optics and LX dual fiber with distances up to 125km or single fiber up to 40km. How a fiber optic media converter works: In recent years it has become apparent that fiber-optics are steadily replacing copper wire as an appropriate means of communication signal transmission. They span the long distances between local phone systems as well as providing the backbone for many network systems. Other system users include cable television services, university campuses, office buildings, industrial plants, and electric utility companies. This is an overview of fiber-optic technology, telecommunication applications, fiber-optic advantages and disadvantages, and fiber-optic economics.

A fiber-optic system is similar to the copper wire system that fiber-optics is replacing. The difference is that fiber-optics use light pulses to transmit information down fiber lines instead of using electronic pulses to transmit information down copper lines. Looking at the components in a fiber-optic chain will give a better understanding of how the system works in conjunction with wire based systems.

At one end of the system is a transmitter. This is the place of origin for information coming on to fiber-optic lines. The transmitter accepts coded electronic pulse information coming from copper wire. It then processes and translates that information into equivalently coded light pulses. A light-emitting diode (LED) or an injection-laser diode (ILD) can be used for generating the light pulses. Using a lens, the light pulses are funneled into the fiber-optic medium where they transmit themselves down the line.Light pulses move easily down the fiber-optic line because of a principle known as total internal reflection. "This principle of total internal reflection states that when the angle of incidence exceeds a critical value, light cannot get out of the glass; instead, the light bounces back in. When this principle is applied to the construction of the fiber-optic strand, it is possible to transmit information down fiber lines in the form of light pulses.There are generally five elements that make up the construction of a fiber-optic strand, or cable: the optic core, optic cladding, a buffer material, a strength material and the outer jacket (Fig. 1). The optic core is the light carrying element at the center of the optical fiber. It is commonly made from a combination of silica and germania. Surrounding the core is the optic cladding made of pure silica . It is this combination that makes the principle of total internal reflection possible. The difference in materials used in the making of the core and the cladding creates an extremely reflective surface at the point in which they interface. Light pulses entering the fiber core reflect off the core/cladding interface and thus remain within the core as they move down the line.

The Model 100GC features a 1000BASE-T copper port and a 1000BASE-SX fiber port, compliant with IEEE 802.3 standards. The 1000BASE-SX port contains an 850nm VCSEL laser capable of transmitting over 220 meters on 62.5/125 micron multimode fiber or over 550 meters on 50/125 micron fiber. The Model 1102C standalone, 100 Mbps media converter significantly helps lower the cost of Fiber-to-the-Desk in Fast Ethernet applications. The Model 1102C media converter provides the lowest cost solution for 100Mbps fiber in the horizontal, approaching the cost of a Category 5e UTP solution, but enhanced with the lower-cost 850nm optics and many inherent and proven advantages of fiber.When connected to another 100BASE-SX-compliant device, The Model 1102C auto-negotiates the link speed and duplex mode.
