American Data Supply is a national Firestop distributor and firestop supplier for a multitude of firestop products and carries a complete line of Firestop Products and Fire Stop Protection products. Our complete line of firestop fire protection products helps stop the spread of fire, smoke and toxic fumes. Our firestop fire protection produsts are easy to install and are approved for a wide variety of firestop applications by Underwriter’s Laboratories. Total passive firestop and 'fire' protection cannot be achieved with the use of a singular product. It is the use of many products designed for specific firestop applications that comprise a complete passive firestop fire protection systems. When installed properly, these firestop products work in concert with one another to create effective barriers against the passage of flames, smoke, and superheated gases. Used is conjunction with other firestop fire protection methods, properly installed passive fire protection will save lives, protect property, and minimize business losses.

Firestop and Firestopping is an integral part of fire protection engineering in all commercial buildings and are required by law in most states to satisfy mandated laws for commercial building fire protection.  Firestop systems protect against the passage of flames, deadly gases and toxic smoke through openings that are created for penetrations, joints and gaps in fire-resistive walls, floors and floor/ceiling assemblies.  The integrity of fire-rated assemblies is restored by firestop systems.  Building codes require third-party tested systems to be installed whenever fire-rated construction is compromised by such openings.

What is meant by "active" and "passive" fire protection?

Active fire suppression includes mechanical systems such as sprinklers,  that are designed to extinguish fires after they have started.  Passive fire protection functions to contain fires within the areas in which they start, preventing loss of life by preventing the products of combustion (smoke, hot gasses and flames) from spreading throughout a building.

Why is "passive" fire protection necessary?

Fire is a dangerous enough phenomenon that redundancy in fire protection is necessary.  Having passive protection in place helps assure building occupants that there will be time to exit before gasses, fire and smoke spread throughout the building.  If  active systems fail, as they often do, then there is still a passive system in place for life safety.

Joints

Construction joints must be sealed with joint systems, which will impart a fire resistance at least equal to those of the adjacent constructions so that overall fire resistance is not compromised.

Additional Information

Fire resistive joint systems are used in building construction to seal joints, and must be of the same or greater fire resistance (temperature) rating as the wall or floor containing the opening which they are designed to protect. Perimeter joint systems are most often used to seal a clearance separation between curtain walls and floors. They are designed to accommodate various movements induced
